A Little About Elvis

For die-hard fans of Elvis, there are very few facts that are unknown about the man. But, if you are new to Elvis' music and life, here are just a few interesting facts to know:

  • There is much dispute about the correct spelling of Elvis' middle name. While his birth certificate says "Aaron", it is spelled "Aron" on other official documents.
  • His first record, recorded at Sun Records, featured the songs "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin".
  • Elvis struggled through the same disappointments that most musicians face, including failed auditions and an ill-received performance on the Grand Ole Opry (his only appearance on that show).
  • His well-known hip shaking moves first came about at an outdoor concert at Overton Park Shell, where his gyrating hips caused screams from the young women in the audience.
  • In the span of one year (1955-1956), Elvis went from a semi-known artist to an international star.
  • His first albums with RCA, featured the much-loved hits "Heartbreak Hotel" (Elvis' first number one pop hit) and "Blue Suede Shoes".
  • His music crossed genre borders, with hits in Country and Gospel. In fact, his three Grammy® Awards were all for gospel songs.
  • His video for "Jailhouse Rock" was the first music video of its kind.
  • As an actor he appeared in 33 films, including movies like Love Me Tender and Blue Hawaii.
  • While serving in the U.S. Army, Elvis met Priscilla Beaulieu in Friedberg, Germany. Priscilla, fourteen at the time she and Elvis met, would later becomes his wife after 7 ½ years of courtship. The couple would later divorce.
  • Elvis' only child, Lisa Marie, was born on February 1, 1968.
  • His final concert was held on June 26, 1977 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN.
  • Elvis passed away on August 16, 1977.
